Gregg Popovich rips Spurs after loss to Knicks

Gregg Popovich interviewGregg Popovich was all over his team for making history on Tuesday — and not the good kind.

The San Antonio Spurs became the first defending champion to lose to a team with a sub-.200 record when they fell to the 14-53 Knicks 104-100 on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Predictably, Pop did not have many compliments for his team.

“They moved the ball better than we did, they played better team basketball. We didn’t respect the game, we didn’t respect our opponent, it was a pathetic performance. I hope that every player is embarrassed, not because we’re ‘supposed to win the game,’ but it’s about how you play the game. Their movement and unselfishness was great, their juice and competitiveness was better than ours and they respected the game. They got rewarded for it. I’m happy for them,” Pop said via Spurs reporter Dan McCarney.

The Spurs only shot 38.3 percent from the field including 21.4 percent on threes. They turned the ball over 11 times compared to just 17 assists. That’s not exactly a winning formula. At least it’s good to know Pop doesn’t reserve his ornery behavior strictly for lowly reporters.
