Gregg Popovich calls Spurs’ home winning streak ‘meaningless’

While the Golden State Warriors have been understandably getting most of the publicity in their chase for 73 wins, the San Antonio Spurs are chasing a lower-profile mark: the opportunity to become the first NBA team to go unbeaten at home over an entire season.

The Spurs have won 48 straight at home dating back to last season, with a 39-0 mark at AT&T Center in 2015-16. How much do you think Gregg Popovich cares? I’ll give you one guess.

If you guessed not at all, you would be correct.

“What does that get you if you’re defeated? Does it win you anything? That’s why it’s meaningless,” Popovich said, via Pat Graham of the Associated Press. “Maybe a cup of coffee or something. But that’s about it.”

One wonders what Popovich would do if faced with the same dilemma that Steve Kerr is. He would, in all likelihood, stick to his guns and rest his players when he wants and where he wants. It’s just what he does, for better or worse. Moreover, downplaying things like this probably helps alleviate some of the pressure that comes with such chases – just ask the Warriors. Pop’s not trying to set records; he’s trying to win championships.
