Gregg Popovich: I wouldn’t even coach an NBA Finals game in July

The NBA is reportedly considering the idea of extending the regular season later into the summer. While there would still be an 82-game season, the idea would be to eliminate back-to-back games and not cram so many games into such a short span.

Mark Cuban said last month that he thinks a more spaced-out schedule would be a great idea. But if the season does eventually spill over into July, don’t even bother asking Gregg Popovich to show up.

“I will not come to work in July,” the San Antonio Spurs coach said Wednesday, per Dan McCarney of the San Antonio Express-News. “If there’s a game in July, count me out.”

Popovich is 66 years old. There aren’t many people that age who would be receptive to a major change, and extending the NBA season would be just that. Pop has also won five NBA championships and been named the NBA Coach of the Year three times, so you can understand why he likes things just the the way they are.

And if the NBA goes through with the change and Pop’s Spurs make the NBA Finals, he claims the team will have to play without him.

“Count me out,” he said. “Life is too short.”

Of course, Popovich is joking — to an extent. He’d never abandon his team during the NBA Finals, but he might retire before it got to that point. Then again, some don’t think Pop is planning to go anywhere any time soon.
