Report: Joe Lacob considered offering Stephen Curry contract below max

Steph Curry

Stephen Curry is about as much of no-brainer max player as there is in the NBA today, but apparently his team’s owner doesn’t quite think so.

According to a report by Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic on Thursday, Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob considered extending the two-time Most Valuable Player a contract offer below the max before the summer.

Per Thompson:

On top of that, as the Warriors prepared for the postseason, Warriors owner Joe Lacob was considering offering Curry a contract below the max, even though Curry has been one of the most underpaid players in all of sports over the last three seasons. Warriors general manager Bob Myers kept Lacob from bringing a reduced offer to the negotiating table, but it was enough of a thing that Myers reassured Curry of the franchise’s commitment.

It was ultimately a non-issue as Curry went on to sign a five-year, $201 million deal (the largest in NBA history at the time) to remain with the Dubs. But as hinted above, he was grossly underpaid on his last contract making just $48 million over four years, and a lowball like that might not have gone over well.

Then again, Curry did say in August that he offered to take less than the max to help the team stay intact, but it may have been a different story if they were the ones making that call instead of him.
