Kevin Durant calls out Thunder after collapse: ‘We’re fooling ourselves’

Kevin Durant

The Oklahoma City Thunder were searching for answers after losing a game to the Los Angeles Clippers that they led by 17 when the fourth quarter began.

The Thunder have lost 5 of 7 since the All-Star Break, and Wednesday night’s performance – a game they led by 22, only to lose 103-98 – is a new low for a team with championship aspirations. Afterwards, Kevin Durant had no choice but to tell it like it is.

“They made plays, we didn’t,” Durant said, via ESPN’s Royce Young. “They were disciplined, we weren’t. We want to be a great team. We’re fooling ourselves. If we just want to be a great team, the way we’re playing, we’re fooling ourselves. We want to win a bunch of games in the regular season, that’s cool, but we’re fooling ourselves with the way we’re playing.”

The Thunder are pretty clearly lagging behind both the Golden State Warriors and San Antonio Spurs right now, but Durant is still trying to stay optimistic.

“We lost a few games, lost some tough ones,” Durant said. “But at the end of the day, we’re playing basketball, something we love to do every single day. When you look at it like that, it’s not as tough as you think. But losing does suck. And we hate losing. But at the end of the day, we’re still in a good spot. We’ve just got to climb out of where we’re at right now.”

Oklahoma City will ultimately be fine, though with a trip to Golden State on the agenda Thursday night, things could get worse before they get better. They’ll make the playoffs, but the situation is that there are two teams ahead of them that can probably beat them in a seven game series. For a team whose biggest star could leave in the offseason, that’s not good news.
