Kevin Durant ‘damn sure’ wasn’t signing with Warriors if they won championship

Kevin Durant recently said he is unsure if he would have ended up with the Golden State Warriors if they beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. But in a new interview, Durant made his intentions a lot more clear.

If the Warriors finished off the Cavs after jumping out to a 3-1 series lead, Durant would not have joined them.

“It felt like that whole thing was set up for me to leave (Oklahoma City), especially after they blew a lead in the Finals, because I damn sure wasn’t going there if they’d won,” Durant told Paul Solotaroff of Rolling Stone. “But after Game Seven, I called up my agent and said, ‘Damn, dude, Golden State – what if?'”

Does that mean Durant would have stayed with the Thunder? Plenty of teams were courting the seven-time All-Star, some of them already contenders and others that clearly would have been if they added Durant to the mix. Many were shocked that Durant chose to leave OKC after the Thunder were just one win away from replacing the Warriors in the NBA Finals, but K.D.’s relationship with his former teammates may have been a factor.

In the same interview with Rolling Stone, Durant opened up about his relationship with Russell Westbrook. The comments he made are very interesting and worth reading.

If the Warriors go on to win multiple championships with Durant, blowing a lead against LeBron James in the NBA Finals could be one of the best things that ever happened to the franchise.
