Report: Kings set to interview Henry Bibby, Mike Bibby’s father

The Sacramento Kings’ quest to fill their vacant head coaching position is getting a little bit out of hand.

According to a report by Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee on Tuesday, the Kings are set to interview Henry Bibby, the father of beloved former King Mike Bibby.

The elder Bibby enjoyed an illustrious career as a player in the 1970s, winning three straight national championships at UCLA under John Wooden before a nine-year tenure in the NBA, where he won the 1973 title with the Knicks. He also has coached basketball at a multitude of levels, winning two championships in the Continental Basketball Association, spending nine seasons at the helm of the USC men’s basketball team (leading them to an Elite Eight appearance in 2001), and having a brief stint as head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. But his coaching experience in the Association has been relatively thin, limited to sporadic appearances as an assistant for the Sixers, the Grizzlies, and the Pistons over the last decade.

The younger Bibby, meanwhile, played for Sacramento from 2001 to 2007, enjoying the best years of his NBA career over that stretch. The jokes are sure to abound especially for a team that has already hired fellow 2000s Kings legends Vlade Divac (general manager) and Peja Stojakovic (director of player personnel/development) to upper-level management positions.

The Kings have already sniffed around candidates such as Kevin McHale and Mike Woodson, amongst a smorgasbord of other names. You certainly can’t accuse them of not being thorough in their search, but perhaps they should start considering candidates based on criteria other than the merits of their last name.
