Klay Thompson sets record with 37 points in quarter, upset he missed shot

Klay Thompson went bonkers on Friday night and set an NBA record by scoring 37 freaking points in a quarter during the Golden State Warriors’ 126-101 win over the Sacramento Kings.

Thompson scored 52 points in the game on 16-of-25 shooting (11-for-15 on 3-pointers) and 9-of-10 at the free throw line. He went absolutely nuts in the third quarter and make all 13 field goals he attempted — nine of which were 3-pointers — and both his free throws. He finished the quarter with 50 points in the game and had a chance at Kobe Bryant’s record, but he sat out most of the fourth quarter.

This shot chart is a thing of beauty:

In an interview with ESPN’s “SportsCenter” after the game, Thompson was asked about his mentality while he was in the zone.

“I was honestly trying to shoot til I missed,” Thompson told “SportsCenter.” “I was taking some off-balanced shots, but it was one of those nights where everything was good.”

Thompson said he even got respect from his opponents and that DeMarcus Cousins had a grin and said what Thompson was doing was crazy.

Despite breaking the previous record of 33 points in a quarter shared by Carmelo Anthony and George Gervin, Thompson was not completely satisfied with his performance.

“I was thinking I should have had one more three,” Thompson said. “I had about three or four wide-open looks rim out. But it was just kind of surreal; they showed me the 3rd-quarter stat sheet and to see 13-of-13 — an NBA record — it’s humbling. I’m on cloud nine right now.”
