Klay Thompson on leaving, leading own team: ‘Nah. Winning is too much fun’

Klay Thompson

Fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson will always be the Robin to Stephen Curry’s Batman, the Tonto to Curry’s Lone Ranger, the Ed McMahon to his Johnny Carson. But coming off a 67-win year, an NBA championship, and an 11-0 start to the 2015-16 season, Thompson could really care less.

In a Tuesday interview with Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, Thompson was pressed on if we would ever want to branch out and become the leader of his own team. His response? Thanks but no thanks.

“Winning is so much fun,” said the 25-year-old shooting guard. “It’s one thing to put up numbers and be the top guy on a team and it’s another thing to sacrifice and be on the best team in the NBA. I’ll take the latter every time. We have a lot of guys in this locker room who could be franchise players for other teams. That doesn’t matter. At the end of the day people are going to remember championships. That’s what it’s all about.”

One of the most understated parts of the Golden State machine has been just that: the check-your-ego-at-the-door, team-first culture that the Warriors embody. It shows on the court with their symphonic ball movement and their healthy shot attempt distribution. And with comments like these, Thompson and Co. show just how much the unselfish, winning mentality extends off the court as well. That, combined with their otherworldly two-way talent make the Dubs a truly unstoppable historical juggernaut.

Perhaps Thompson realizes that his off-the-bounce/dribble-drive game isn’t refined enough to the point that he can be an alpha dog on a legitimate contender or that he wouldn’t look as good defensively without playing alongside some of the massive-limbed athletes Golden State boasts. But heck, if I was given a chance to play on a Warriors team that could do down as a potential dynasty and one of the five greatest teams in NBA history, I wouldn’t think about leaving either.

Wise words from Klay “Winning Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thing” Thompson.
