Klay Thompson wishes he played in 4th quarter, could have scored 80

Klay Thompson

The most impressive thing about Klay Thompson’s 60-point performance against the Indiana Pacers Monday night is that he played just 29 minutes. The Golden State Warriors had such a commanding lead that Thompson didn’t even play in the fourth quarter, so he is now left to wonder what could have been.

And, make no mistake about it, Thompson wanted to keep playing after he was scorching hot through 29 minutes on the floor.

“I did, but it’s just unfortunate the two times I got my career high I didn’t even get to play in the fourth quarter,” Thompson said with a smirk after the game. “We should keep these games closer next time. It’s all good. It’s good to get rest before we go on this road trip.”

A reporter then asked Thompson if he believes he could have scored 80 points if he played in the final quarter.

“I think I could have,” he replied. “Maybe one day I’ll have the opportunity, but 60 in 29 minutes is not too bad. I’m satisfied with that.”

Thompson hit 21-of-33 shots and 8-of-14 from three-point range. His teammates wisely kept feeding him the ball, and as he noted on Twitter he basically just had to catch and shoot all night.

This is precisely what makes the Warriors so dangerous. Thompson is considered the third-best player on the team behind Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry, and he is still capable of scoring 60 points in three quarters. If Thompson pulled a move like this after Monday’s game, it was for an entirely different reason.
