Report: Knicks spoke with David Blatt, but Kurt Rambis still frontrunner for coach

Kurt Rambis

Despite their meeting with David Blatt, Kurt Rambis reportedly remains the clear frontrunner to be the next coach of the New York Knicks.

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, “nothing has changed” with regards to Rambis being the frontrunner, and Knicks president Phil Jackson met with Rambis’s agents on Tuesday night. Berman cautions, however, that Jackson and Rambis share the same representation, so it doesn’t necessarily mean that Rambis’s hiring is imminent.

The Knicks met with Blatt on Monday, with Jackson believing Blatt could adapt and run the requisite triangle offense, but his candidacy is still considered a longshot and it may be more likely that he comes on board as an assistant.

Jackson’s coaching search has been narrow, as it was expected to be, and it seems like he had his ideal candidate in mind before the process started and nothing has changed his mind. This information seems to back up this report about Rambis’s candidacy.

Jackson sounds like he would have preferred Luke Walton, but the Warriors assistant isn’t interested. All signs point to Rambis being the choice in one of the least comprehensive coaching searches in recent memory. For better or worse, Jackson knew exactly what he wanted, and it seems entirely likely that he’s going to hand the job to his guy very soon.
