Report: Lakers may look to trade D’Angelo Russell for top five pick

DAngelo Russell

D’Angelo Russell’s stay in Los Angeles may prove to be a short one.

ESPN’s Chad Ford appeared on SportsCenter Saturday and said that there is a possibility the Lakers shop Russell to get a second pick in the top five of the NBA Draft.

“While I still believe that it will be [Brandon] Ingram at No. 2, the Lakers have explored other options,” Ford said. “And again I think the concern with Ingram is his lack of strength and how NBA-ready he’s going to be because of that. I think more likely the Lakers are trying to pick up another pick in this draft in the top five and the guy that they have that they can shop is D’Angelo Russell, a guy who was their No. 2 pick in the draft last year but burned some bridges in the locker room.”

Russell has a chance to become a very good player, but his involvement in the Nick Young video leak last season made things very difficult for him. His coach is a big believer and he’s taking an optimistic view going forward, but the Lakers apparently may decide that a change of scenery is best for all involved, even with a rookie crop that isn’t extremely highly regarded. It probably doesn’t make them a better basketball team, though.
