Report: LeBron James informs Cavs he will re-sign with team

LeBron James has reportedly informed the Cleveland Cavaliers that he will re-sign with the team at some point this summer.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, LeBron has assured the Cavs he is not going anywhere but has given “no timetable for negotiating or signing a deal.” The reigning NBA Finals MVP has several contract options he could choose for next season but is said to be in no rush.

The most likely scenario is that James will do what he has done the past two seasons, which is to sign a two-year deal with Cleveland that allows him to opt out next summer. With the salary cap set to increase once again, that will put him in position to earn as much money as possible when he signs a max contract. LeBron could also sign a one-year deal with the Cavs worth $27.5 million for the 2016-2017 season.

The Cavs are still looking to re-sign J.R. Smith, who shares an agent with LeBron. However, Windhorst notes that Smith’s contract negotiations have nothing to do with James’ plans. Judging by what Smith recently said about his situation, it sounds like there is at least a chance he has priced his way out of Cleveland.

LeBron already refused to take a pay cut for one of his closest friends, so there’s no way he will be taking less money just so the Cavs can sign other free agents.
