LeBron James thinks Russell Westbrook can average triple-double over full season

Russell Westbrook

Consider LeBron James the latest worshipper at the altar of The Brodie.

James told the media on Wednesday that he thinks Oklahoma City Thunder point godzilla Russell Westbrook can average a triple-double over the course of the entire 2016-17 season.

“Westbrook can do it,” James said, per ESPN. “He’s capable of doing it. He’s showing it. He’s like the Energizer Bunny, man. He just doesn’t get tired. He doesn’t get tired, and when you have that passion for the game, too, as well, it’s very doable.”

Of course, no player in NBA history has averaged a triple-double over a full season other than Hall of Fame point guard Oscar Robertson in 1961-62. But through 22 games, Westbrook is on pace to do so with averages of 31.0 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 11.3 assists per contest. Whether or not Westbrook can keep it up for the final 60 games of the season will likely come down to a matter of stamina. But as James alluded to, the UCLA product borders on the superhuman in that category.

The four-time MVP James knows a thing or two about what it takes to get a triple-double, having recorded 45 of them and counting in his career. And as such, his confidence in Westbrook, who has already logged three more career triple-doubles than James has in five fewer seasons, is far from misguided.
