Magic Johnson compares Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram to himself and James Worthy

Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson is clearly high on the potential of what Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram can become while wearing the purple and gold.

During Johnson’s heyday, he was the catalyst for the “Showtime” Lakers that captivated fans across the country with their flashy, up-and-down the court style of play. Those teams teams featured Johnson leading the fast break and having options like James Worthy, Byron Scott, and Michael Cooper to pass to on the wing.

While we may be a few decades removed from those days, the Lakers could be on the way back to an entertaining brand of basketball after four consecutive losing seasons. With the No. 2 overall pick in each of the last two NBA Drafts on the roster, Johnson has hopes Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram can develop a chemistry like the one Johnson had with Worthy.

Ball is a pass-first point guard who has been known to make those around him better with his advanced vision and passing skills, which is what people often said about Johnson. Ingram is a forward with a unique skillset, who showed down the stretch last season what enticed Los Angeles to select him when they did.

Ball and Ingram are still very young and several years away from their peaks as NBA players. Even if they don’t end up a legendary duo like Magic Johnson and James Worthy, a reasonable facsimile would be nothing to be ashamed of and surely welcomed by the Lakers and their fans.
