Malik Monk involved in car accident, cited for careless driving

Malik Monk

Malik Monk banged up his car in an accident this week, and police determined that the Charlotte Hornets rookie was at fault for the crash because of the way he was driving.

According to police documents obtained by TMZ, Monk was driving near the University of Arkansas campus early Sunday morning when his 2002 Lexus went off the road and crashed into a gate. The car needed to be towed to a nearby impound lot, and police ended up citing Monk with careless driving and not having proof of insurance. The former Kentucky star reportedly said he took his eyes off the road for a brief moment.

“I was driving, looked down for a second then I just hit a bump,” Monk told police.

It’s unclear if Monk was injured, though police allowed him to retrieve several personal items from the car before it was towed. All indications are that he did not suffer any significant injuries.

Monk, the No. 11 overall pick by Charlotte in last year’s draft, is averaging 5.0 points and 1.2 assists per game. He has played an average of just 12.1 minutes per contest in his rookie season and has struggled on the defensive side of the ball.
