Marcin Gortat calls Wizards bench ‘one of worst in league’

The Wizards fell to 2-7 on the season after a 106-95 loss to the Bulls on Saturday. After the game, Marcin Gortat, as he usually does, said what was on his mind. That included what he thinks about play of the reserves thus far.

Washington has a pretty solid starting five of John Wall, Bradley Beal, Otto Porter, Markieff Morris, and Gortat, when all are healthy. After that, there are questions. When the starters need a breather, there’s little confidence right now in the backups being able to hold down the fort.

Those who have watched Washington play have likely thought it, but Gortat said it on Saturday that the Wizards have one of the worst benches in the league.

“What can we do? Well, we’ve got to play better. We’ve got to compete,” Gortat told the Washington Post. “We need energy. We need effort. We’ve got to make shots. I think there’s a lot of things we can do better. I think right now, as far as I know, I think we’ve got one of the worst benches in the league right now.”

Last year, the Wizards had Jared Dudley, Ramon Sessions, Garrett Temple, Kris Humphries, and Nene at their disposal when needed. This season, all are playing for other teams. With the faces now different, it should be expected their will be an adjustment period. However, with the Wizards already in a bit of a hole, they will need to right the ship sooner rather than later.

Gortat is rarely shy when it comes to saying what he feels. Sometimes he directs it at haters on Twitter. Other times, his head coach is in the cross hairs.

For what it’s worth, Gortat did apologize for his remarks, which came during a moment of frustration.
