Report: ‘Matter of time’ before JR Smith negotiates with other teams

With training camp having been open for three weeks, J.R. Smith still doesn’t have a deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers – and he may soon have to look elsewhere to find a suitor.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, it will only be “a matter of time” before Smith begins looking elsewhere, with the Cavs still refusing to offer Smith much more than $10-$11 million.

Minnesota, Phoenix, Utah, Denver, Brooklyn and Philadelphia all have at least $13 million in cap space and could tempt Smith if they choose to come forward with an offer that comes closer to meeting his demands. Stein also confirms that Boston has legitimate interest in Smith, but their lack of cap space at the moment makes the pairing impossible.

This standoff will have to end sooner or later. Smith still clearly believes he can get more than what Cleveland is offering. Perhaps he really will call their bluff.
