Report: NBA could give Adam Silver power to fine teams for resting players

Adam Silver

The NBA is looking to seriously crack down on teams resting players, especially on the road and in nationally televised games — and they’re looking to give commissioner Adam Silver rather significant power to do something about it.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA board of governors will vote on Sept. 28 on major changes proposed by the competition committee, including new rules for resting players. The guidelines will encourage teams to rest players in home games that are not nationally televised so that fans in other cities can get a look at star players.

If teams defy these guidelines, under the rule, Silver will have the discretionary power to levy fines against teams.

The NBA has worked very hard to give teams fewer excuses to rest players. The possibility that Silver could arbitrarily fine them would just be another disincentive.
