The NBA is planning to change the timing of free agency to make it more TV and fan-friendly.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said on Tuesday that the hour free agency begins will be changed next year.
Adam Silver makes it clear that free agency will be moved up from midnight EST on July 1 to a more reasonable/TV friendly hour by next summer.

Free agency begins when the new league year starts, which is midnight EST on July 1. Fans and media members who want to be around for the exciting news have to stay up extremely late for it. The new plan would have it begin at a more reasonable hour that would seem to satisfy all parties.
So much of what Silver has done since taking over as commissioner has made perfect sense, and this is no different. He also has his eyes on making another rule change.
