NBA shortens free agency moratorium after DeAndre Jordan saga

DeAndre Jordan

The NBA has shortened its July free agency moratorium in response to last year’s DeAndre Jordan saga.

The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday that the NBA and NBAPA agreed to shorten the free agent moratorium from seven days to five days. That means players will be able to sign with teams on July 6 instead of July 8.

This matter received renewed attention last year after Jordan agreed to a deal with the Dallas Mavericks on July 3 before going back on his decision and eventually re-signing with the Clippers. The moratorium meant the Mavericks were left hanging for a longer period of time not knowing whether Jordan would actually sign with them.

The moratorium begins on July 1 and it allows the league a chance to conduct a season-ending audit. Now teams will not have to wait as long to paper a deal after verbally agreeing to one with a player.
