NBA scout: Draymond Green is ‘just not that talented’

Draymond Green

Draymond Green is enjoying a career year this season with the Western Conference-leading Golden State Warriors. His 11.6 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game coupled with some fantastic defense have led many to conclude that he is a true difference-maker for the Warriors.

There will be no shortage of interest in Green when he becomes a free agent this summer, but at least one NBA scout feels that the only team that should be throwing big bucks at him is Golden State.

“He’s one of those guys who’s a product of the system,” an anonymous scout told Howard Beck of Bleacher Report. “I’d be very uncomfortable paying him zillions of dollars. He is situationally [valuable]. He’s got two great point guards, he gets a lot of surplus stuff from them. He’s a good rebounder. He’s a complementary guy. But he’s going to get paid like a second or third option, probably.”

There’s no question that playing alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson benefits Green, but that would be true for anyone. However, the scout took it a step further and basically said Green just isn’t that good of a player.

“I would be cautious, if I’m any team other than Golden State,” he added. “I’m not sure his talents are totally transferable. He’s just not that talented. He does the little things, he can guard, he’s a winning player. What they like about him is his leadership; he’s become the leader of that team. I’m not sure that’s transferable.”

In other words, Mr. Anonymous Scout feels that Green is a role player and nothing else. Role players don’t get max contracts, so Green had better hope others disagree. But if players get bonus points for awesome death stares and hilarious quotes about Tim Duncan, Green deserves to be paid handsomely.
