Nets.com owned by 69-year-old Jane Hill and her son

Nets-website

The Brooklyn Nets do not own the rights to the domain name www.nets.com. All that has been known about that domain name to this point is that it is consistently used to troll the Nets, presumably in an attempt to coax the team into buying it.

Finally, the identity behind the heckling has been revealed.

Andrew Keh of the New York Times spoke with 69-year-old Jane Hill and her 37-year-old son John for a feature story this week. The Hills own Nets.com, and they have made their intentions quite clear.

In her first interview about the site, which began over a plate of scrambled eggs and sliced tomatoes in a Santa Fe diner, Hill came clean. She wants the Nets, or someone, to buy Nets.com. And she wants millions for it.

“We’ve had fun with the mystery of it all,” she said with a smile.

Jane Hill, a former photographer and web entrepreneur, has owned Nets.com since 1996. She and her son have used the site to mock the Nets over the years. While the team obviously doesn’t appreciate it, they aren’t bothered by it to the point where they are willing to pay millions to acquire the domain name.

“Our website is BrooklynNets.com, and our fans know this is our site,” team spokesman Barry Baum told Keh. “Brooklyn Nets is our brand, and we have no interest in Nets.com, despite the shameful efforts of the registrant to attempt to sell us this domain name for seven figures.”

John Hill said he takes it as a compliment when people refer to his and his mother’s work with Nets.com as “the ultimate troll.”

If the Nets don’t want to buy Nets.com, perhaps you can. It’s currently for sale on eBay with an unknown reserve that has not been met. As of the time I was writing this post, the highest bid was $150,000 with roughly four hours remaining in the auction. It seems highly unlikely that the Hills will be selling the domain — at least this week.
