Paul Pierce Ejection Video – Referee Ed Malloy Going too Far?

Easily the most controversial call of the second round of the NBA Playoffs came in Game 1 of the Heat-Celtics series. Paul Pierce already had one technical foul when he set a screen on Dwyane Wade in the fourth quarter. They exchanged words, and Pierce may have said something to referee Ed Malloy who gave him his second technical. The second technical resulted in an automatic ejection that had Doc Rivers livid and all fans screaming about the call. Here’s a video of the Paul Pierce ejection for you to judge:

Jeff Van Gundy was going nuts as a commentator about the call, saying referee Ed Malloy had gone too far. Fans were screaming the same thing. That may be the case, but we can’t fairly judge the situation until we know what Pierce said to Malloy. The NBA instituted a rule before the season saying players were being watched more closely for overt reactions to calls and that their reactions could result in technicals. I’m guessing that’s the reason Pierce got his second technical that resulted in his ejection.

Under these guidelines, it’s quite possible that Pierce’s words (or actions) warranted a tech. Whether the rule should be in place is a debatable issue, but what isn’t questionable is receiving a technical for overt reactions to calls under these rules. Sadly this isn’t the first controversial call we’ve had during the playoffs.

Chest bump to Ben Golliver for the video

You know, this is the second time I have read one of your idiotic posts. You obviously have a vendetta of some sort against the Celtics. What a hack. Everyone knows that this does not warrant a second T and ejection from a playoff game. People cuss at each other every game, every day of the season and no techncicals are ever called. You know this! If they had thrown Dwayne Wade out of the game, you’d be up in arms. Dwayne Wade ran into Pierce on the pick and then moved toward him after the play. Why isn’t that a technical, if you’re going to get technical? This was a hack call from a hack ref and is now being justified as at least plausibly right by a hack writer. Don’t write about the Celtics anymore. You’re prejudiced and you can’t admit it. Write about how the Knicks were cheated by the refs in the last series. Right. Hack!!!!

why are you saying that Pierce said something to malloy? He was talking to Wade, not at the ref. If the cussing is at Wade, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t the first time he’s heard it. I’m pretty sure Wade had something to say for himself. Even Jeff Van Gundy, the pro-Miami commentator knew better. This is absolutely ridiculous. it’s not just the celtics fans who say this. anybody watching saw that this is Stern’s body of work. You can see it, just when the Celtics are on a run, a ridiculous call will be made to stop the momentum (see the flagrant on O’Neil that turned into a 5pt play).

Why are there even refs in basketball? We all know the games are called according to how the NBA wants them called and it will never change until there is replay that can back the players and coaches.

This is the kind of call that would be made in the NCAA. This is the playoffs of the NBA and these players should be allowed to say something to another player, especially after a hit like Pierce took. If it escalates that’s another story, but it didn’t. Pierce was walking away after they exchanged words. All the refs are going to do if they continue to call like this, is cause bigger problems later in the game because the players haven’t been able to blow off steam a bit at a time.
