Pistons owner noncommittal on Stan Van Gundy’s future

Stan Van Gundy

After a promising start, Stan Van Gundy hasn’t really turned around the Detroit Pistons, and it sounds like he may be on the hot seat because of it.

Van Gundy did not receive a vote of confidence from Pistons owner Tom Gores, who spoke to the media at halftime of Friday’s win.

“It’s about what happened this year, what we’re gonna do, our future,” Gores said, via Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News. “Stan’s a team player. We’re not winning enough, so we have to talk about that.”

Gores was evasive when asked if Van Gundy would remain coach next season, which would be the final year of his contract.

“Stan and I have not discussed that,” Gores said. “I believe in Stan, but he’s a team player, so we’re gonna see. He’ll do exactly the right thing for this franchise. But right now he’s busy coaching this team. We’ll go from there.”

The disappointing Pistons sit 30-36, five games out of the East’s final playoff spot. There have been some suggestions that he might lose only one of his roles, but it sounds like he should at least have some concerns about his future with the organization.
