PJ Carlesimo could reportedly join Sixers staff if Mike D’Antoni leaves

PJ Carlesimo

As the Sixers’ post-Sam Hinkie makeover continues, it could be bringing a well-known basketball figure back into the spotlight: P.J. Carlesimo.

According to a report by Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical on Friday, Carlesimo could join the Sixers staff to replace Mike D’Antoni as head coach Brett Brown’s top assistant if D’Antoni does indeed leave the team.

Carlesimo, 66, was a head coach in the league for nine total seasons starting in 1994, making the playoffs four times and compiling a record of 239-315 (.451) over that period. He has also enjoyed a successful career as an assistant, including winning three NBA championships in the 2000s as a member of the Spurs staff.

D’Antoni, who currently holds the title of associate head coach to Brown on the Sixers, is looking like a probable potential hire for the Rockets’ head coaching position.

Replacing the offensive-minded D’Antoni with a more orthodox hoops thinker like Carlesimo would mark just the latest cultural shift for the Sixers as they move forward into the future.
