Quinton Ross had to tell everyone he wasn’t dead

Quinton-Ross-MavericksFamily and friends of former NBA player Quinton Ross were struck with fear for a short time on Monday when reports surfaced that Ross had been found dead. The New York Post reported — and later corrected — that a man had been found buried in a shallow grave on a Far Rockaway city beach in New York, and they identified the man as the former Nets basketball player.

“My phone was going crazy,” Ross told the Associated Press. “I checked Facebook. Finally, I went on the Internet, and they were saying I was dead. I just couldn’t believe it.”

The actual victim, whose body was reportedly stuffed in a trash bag, was also named Quinton Ross. The former NBA player attended Monday night’s NIT game between LSU and SMU and had to call loved ones and make a Facebook post letting people know he was alive and well.

“A couple (relatives) already heard it,” he said. “They were crying. I mean, it was a tough day, man, mostly for my family and friends.”

The 32-year-old Ross played his college ball at SMU and spent seven seasons in the NBA with a number of different teams. We’re glad he’s OK, and our thoughts go out to the actual victim’s family and friends.
