Report: Raptors have had all ‘positive’ conversations with Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard

Kawhi Leonard may have every intention of leaving the Toronto Raptors after one season, but that does not mean he is planning to be a malcontent during what will likely be a brief tenure with the team.

When word first surfaced that Leonard had been traded to Toronto early Wednesday morning, numerous NBA reporters were told the star forward has no interest in playing for the Raptors and is unhappy about the trade. However, Michael Grange of Rogers Sportsnet reports that Leonard and his agent spoke with Raptors representatives multiple times, and all of the conversations were “positive.”

There have been rumblings that Leonard will consider sitting out the entire 2018-2019 season to show how unhappy he is about being traded to Toronto, but that is not going to happen. Even if he still wants to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Raptors have a chance to contend in a weak Eastern Conference next year. There’s no reason Kawhi can’t enjoy a deep playoff run before he becomes a free agent.

For what it’s worth, one report claims the Lakers aren’t the only team Kawhi is considering signing with. If that’s the case, perhaps there is a chance — albeit a very small one — that the Raptors could end up convincing him to stay.
