Report: Raptors recently assured DeMar DeRozan he would not be traded

The Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs are reportedly on the verge of finalizing a trade involving superstars Kawhi Leonard and DeMar DeRozan, and they may have a serious problem on their hands if the deal falls through.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski and Chris Haynes of ESPN, Leonard and DeRozan have both been informed that an agreement in principle could be reached as soon as Wednesday. With Leonard trade rumors having swirled for weeks, DeRozan reportedly met with Toronto’s brass in Las Vegas during the summer league and was assured he will not be traded.

Early Wednesday morning, DeRozan sent some cryptic messages about loyalty on Instagram.

The Raptors would be taking a serious risk by trading for Leonard, as the star forward is said to be intent on signing with the Los Angeles Lakers when he becomes a free agent next summer. DeRozan is signed through the 2019-2020 season with a player option for the following season, so Toronto would have been assured of having him under team control for at least two more years.

DeRozan appeared to hint at a possible trade with his social media activity last week, so perhaps he saw this coming.
