Spurs would target Marc Gasol if Duncan, Ginobili retire

Marc Gasol

The San Antonio Spurs have plans in place just in case some of their veterans decide to retire this offseason. One such plan would be to target Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol.

Gasol is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season and will have no shortage of suitors for his services. The Grizzlies want him back, while teams like the Lakers and Knicks would love to sign him. So would the Spurs, according to Sporting News’ Sean Deveney, but that is merely a contingency plan if San Antonio’s big dogs retire.

Tim Duncan, who will be 39 in April, has said he will continue to play as long as he’s still effective, which remains the case. He will be a free agent after the season. Plus, given his financial issues and divorce, he might want to continue earning a pay check. Manu Ginobili will be 38 next season and is dealing with an ankle injury. He also will be a free agent after the season. Despite his age, he too remains an effective player for the Spurs.

We don’t see Duncan and Ginobili retiring after the season, but if they do, keep in mind that the Spurs would be players for Gasol.
