Spurs send personalized jersey to Kirk Cousins, Wizards take exception

Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins recently said that he wants the team to be like the San Antonio Spurs of the NFL, so the Spurs decided to show him some love.

“I’ve told my teammates that I’d like to be the San Antonio Spurs of the NFL, be super boring and maybe people at the end of the season just go: ‘Wow. They had a really good year and no one talked about it,'” Cousins said in an interview last month with Hank Kurz Jr. of the Associated Press. “I don’t need to promote myself. I don’t need to promote what we’re doing. We have plenty of people here who are very good at doing that if we play well enough.

“I just want to play football,” the 28-year-old signal caller continued. “I don’t want to worry about anything else, and I found from playing at Michigan State and playing even before that, if you win football games, everything else takes care of itself. It’s pretty simple. It’s a pretty simple recipe.”

Apparently, the Spurs caught wind of the remarks and decided to reward Cousins for the shoutout, sending him a customized San Antonio jersey.

Unfortunately however, the Redskins’ District of Columbia neighbors, the Washington Wizards, found out about the gesture and were less than thrilled.

References to Cousins’ most famous quote notwithstanding, it’s natural for the Wizards to be little territorial. Though the two Washington franchise haven’t always had the strongest bond, you just don’t mess with the intracity professional sports fraternity. Even if you’re Gregg Popovich.
