Stan Van Gundy considering retirement after receiving little interest

Stan Van Gundy

Stan Van Gundy wants to coach again, but after receiving little interest this offseason, he admits his career is at a crossroads.

Speaking to the Real Talk Basketball with Rex Walters podcast, Van Gundy admitted he is considering retirement or semi-retirement after no opportunities came his way following his departure from the Detroit Pistons.

“If I could get a job [for next season], I had planned to coach. Now, I really don’t know,” Van Gundy said, via ESPN. “I’m really lost right now. I don’t have an idea. My wife wants me to retire.

“I want to do something, but if I’m not coaching, I don’t want to work too hard. If I’m going to be grinding, then I want to coach. If I’m not going to be coaching, I want to be semi-retired, at least. I really don’t know.”

Van Gundy said he may do some college teaching or media work if no coaching opportunities present themselves.

After four seasons with Detroit, Van Gundy and the Pistons parted ways in May. Since then, he hasn’t been linked to any openings at all, and with all vacancies now filled, it’s safe to say he won’t be coaching at the NBA level to start the 2018-19 season.
