Stephen Curry made bet with mother due to turnover problems

Steph Curry WarriorsIt’s no secret Stephen Curry is one of the best (or maybe the best) shooters in the NBA. However, in addition to his exploits as a scorer, he was turning the ball over early in the season at a less-than-desirable rate. Needing to do a better job of taking care of the ball, Curry found extra motivation to do so thanks to a wager with his mother.

“Over two (in a game), I owe her some money,” Curry said according to the San Jose Mercury News, smiling. “And the Phoenix game (when Curry committed 10 turnovers), she racked up pretty heavily. So if I go below two, I get the money back. That’s my incentive, my motivation.”

On the floor, Curry credits the reduction to doing a better job staying away from areas that increase the likelihood of him making difficult passes.

“Just trying to make the simple play, stay out of danger zones on the court and getting trapped,” Curry said. “It’s allowing our offense to dictate where the open spaces are, and then I don’t have to make home-run plays and try to thread the needle.”

Through the first six games, including the referenced one against Phoenix, Curry committed 29 turnovers. In the nine games since, he’s given the ball away just 19 times. Included in those nine games are four with less than two turnovers, so it appears the motivation to keep them to a minimum is working.
