Stephen Curry gave up social media for playoffs to avoid distractions

Steph Curry

Stephen Curry wants his sole focus this postseason to be on winning basketball games, so he is making a lifestyle change that LeBron James has been known to make every year before the playoffs begin.

Bye bye for now, Twitter peeps.

Curry told Chris Haynes of ESPN.com this week that he has deleted every social media app from his phone so he can avoid “unnecessary distractions.”

“When you’re really trying to zone in and keep your focus, you don’t want to have any unnecessary distractions during this point of the season,” the two-time NBA MVP said. “We have goals to accomplish, and you want to make sure you’re giving your all.”

James makes it well known that he swears off social media come playoff time, and he even refers to the hiatus as “Zero Dark Thirty-23.” Curry says he too has been giving up tweeting and Instagramming during the postseason for years, but he never spoke about it until now.

“I didn’t do it because (LeBron) did it. I’m not reinventing the wheel,” he said. “It’s just a way to help me keep my focus on what’s important.”

Unlike LeBron, Curry will still send the occasional tweet or photo during the playoffs. However, he insists he has a way of doing it without logging into his account so he doesn’t end up “seeing or reading something I’m trying to avoid.”

Curry scored 29 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists in the Golden State Warriors’ Game 1 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. The break from social media didn’t seem to help him much in the postseason last year, but there may have been a good reason for that. Whether the numbers reflect it or not, doing what you can to avoid trolls is never a bad idea.
