Stephen Curry: Warriors offense ‘pretty much the same’ with Kevin Durant

The worst case scenario for the Golden State Warriors came to fruition Tuesday night, as they were blown out by the San Antonio Spurs in their first ever regular season game with Kevin Durant. Naturally, everyone now wants to know if Durant was part of the problem.

Durant himself looked sharp, scoring a team-high 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting. After the game, reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry was asked if the rest of the offense needs to adjust.

“It’s pretty much the same,” Curry said. “There are certain sets we can go to with his skill set, obviously, to hopefully highlight that and put him in scoring positions. … For the most part I think we only have like one new play from last year, so the offensive identity of who we are and how we get our shots hasn’t changed. There’s a comfort level with that, and he’s adjusted well.

“Our offense wasn’t really an issue tonight, I don’t think. We’ve gotta shore up the other end.”

Curry’s right. While Golden State’s offense wasn’t all that it could be or will be, the Warriors allowed the Spurs to score at will and lost 129-100. Letting up 129 points will result in a loss almost every time — no matter how sharp you are on the offensive side of the ball.

Warriors players have insisted having Durant on board won’t shift the balance on offense, and some have even gotten borderline angry at the suggestion. Lighting up the scoreboard gets all the attention, but Golden State needs to play better defense in order to live up to expectations.
