Stephen Curry’s game-used mouthguard sells for $3,190 at auction
How much would you pay for something that Stephen Curry chewed on and slobbered all over for about 40 minutes? For one ambitious collector, the answer is more than $3,000.
As ESPN’s Darren Rovell pointed out, Curry’s game-used mouthguard that was listed at SCP Auctions earlier this month sold on Sunday morning for $3,190. The bidding for the authentic piece of memorabilia — does a mouthguard count as memorabilia? — started at $1,500. Dan Imler, the vice president of SCP Auctions, said he expected the item to fetch at least $5,000.
That’s a bummer.
Several other unique items were also sold, such as handwritten notes from Julius Erving’s 1981 MVP award acceptance speech, which went for $10,010. A pair of shoes that Dr. J wore and autographed after his final NBA game fetched $8,562.
We’d say Curry’s mouthguard may have been a little too gross to bring more than $3,190, but we have seen some bizarre items sell for big bucks in the past. Maybe the Warriors will go undefeated and win the NBA title next season. A Curry mouthguard from one of those games has to be worth at least five figures.
