Stephen Curry told he needs four weeks to heal, but he won’t sit out

Stephen Curry

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry aggravated his shin injury during a win over the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday night, which is something that has happened quite often lately. If he was willing to take a month off, he wouldn’t have to worry about it.

After the game, Curry told reporters that the training staff has informed him that he would need to sit for four weeks in order for the swelling to subside and the shin to completely heal. Instead, the reigning NBA MVP will continue to risk being kicked during games.

“It’s just frustrating and annoying and any other adjective you want to throw in there,” Curry said, per Diamond Leung of the San Jose Mercury News. “Long term, it’s not something that I have to worry about. It’s just playing through an injury that’s there. It doesn’t get worse if I play on it unless I get kicked, and that’s happened three times since I did it. Hopefully, it won’t keep happening again.”

Curry sat out the final two games of December, and he has been playing less minutes so far this month. Warriors interim coach Luke Walton, who allowed Curry to stay in while the point guard was hobbling Tuesday night, said he won’t force Curry to sit unless the training staff says he should.

“If I hear from the trainers that he should be out, then we’ll take it out of his hands,” Walton said. “But I’ve played with a guy like that. Kobe (Bryant) wouldn’t sit out for anything. Most of the time, he was still able to play at a level that made us a better team.”

Curry said he will continue to receive treatment and play through the injury as long as he can. He’s still leading the NBA with 29.3 points per game, but the Warriors shouldn’t risk having him at less than 100 percent for the playoffs. You have to wonder if this lofty goal has anything to do with Curry’s refusal to take time off.
