Steve Kerr: Rest more important than single-season wins record

Steve Kerr

Now at an unfathomable 55-5 on the season, the Golden State Warriors’ pursuit of the NBA’s single-season wins record (72, set by the Chicago Bulls in 1995-96), is looking less like pie in the sky and more like attainable reality. Too bad head coach Steve Kerr wants to trample on all of our fun.

“Resting, that will take precedence,” Kerr said on Thursday per Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports. “We will rest guys if they need it before we will go for any kind of streak or record, that’s for sure.”

Dubs guard extraordinaire Stephen Curry wasn’t exactly surprised by Kerr’s stance saying, “That is how I assumed he would handle it. Obviously, the big picture is always the most important trying to win a championship.”

Jokes about Kerr being a cantankerous fun-hater aside, it’s definitely the right call. Even if the Warriors break the Bulls’ all-time record, it will ultimately be a meaningless venture if they come up short in the postseason. Just ask the 2007 New England Patriots.

Of the 22 games left on the Warriors’ schedule, five back-to-back sets remain and 11 of those games are against opponents currently sitting at .500 or below, meaning that Kerr should have plenty of time to enact his maintenance plan.

Records are cool and all (especially when you have the blessing of His Airness to go ahead and get it), but at the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is Mr. Larry O’Brien.
