Tim Donaghy arrested for allegedly threatening man with hammer

Tim Donaghy is no stranger to legal trouble, but the circumstances surrounding the disgraced NBA referee’s latest arrest are a bit different.

TMZ reports that Donaghy was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly threatening a man with a hammer. The 50-year-old told police he found out his daughter was doing drugs with a friend at a nearby home, so he took a hammer and went to try to rescue her. While he was outside the home arguing with his daughter, Donaghy was confronted by a man who says the ex-ref brandished the hammer and threatened to use it violently.

The man called police and Donaghy was arrested for aggravated assault. Donaghy’s attorney insists his client did not threaten anyone with the hammer and only brought it along in case he needed protection.

Donaghy resigned from the NBA in 2007 before reports surfaced that he was being investigated for gambling on games that he officiated and fixing them to make money. He later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison. More recently, Donaghy was been trying to expose the way the NBA fixes games so the league can profit.
