Tony Parker expects Spurs to rest starters against Warriors

The San Antonio Spurs will play two of their final eight games against the Golden State Warriors, and it does not sound like Gregg Popovich has any intention of playing spoiler.

The Spurs are currently locked into the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. The Warriors, as we all know, are looking to set the NBA record for most wins in a regular season. They need six wins in eight games to get there. Tony Parker doesn’t expect San Antonio to stand in their way.

“I think no one will play (versus the Warriors),” Parker said on his French radio show, via Jeff Garcia of News 4 San Antonio. “To Pop, the most important thing is that the players are rested for the playoffs. As for first place, he does not care.

“For us, the end of the regular season is a good time to rest. That’s why we play hard throughout the season, trying to win the most games possible, to find ourselves in this situation of luxury, we are sure we will be the second seed and we can all rest before the playoffs.”

What could make things really interesting is that the Spurs have not lost a home game this season. Should the Warriors win every game until they travel to San Antonio on April 10, they could, in theory, be trying to win their record-setting 73rd game while the Spurs are protecting their perfect home record.

Parker doesn’t expect Popovich to take any of that into consideration.

“I think the most important thing for him is to win the NBA title,” Parker said. “The record at home or games against Golden State, is not what interests him.”

If you remember, the Spurs were once reprimanded by the NBA for resting star players during a primetime game. And let’s not forget about the lawsuit that was filed against them over the same game.

Unfortunately for fans who want to see maximum drama, this is something Popovich has been doing for years. He has no reason to change his approach.
