Tyronn Lue takes funny shot at Dwyane Wade over age

Tyronn Lue

The Cleveland Cavaliers have by far the oldest roster in the NBA, and head coach Tyronn Lue likes to remind them of that from time to time.

Lue told reporters on Friday that injured Cavs guard Derrick Rose could be back during the team’s current five-game road trip and may take playing time away from Dwyane Wade so as to help preserve Wade for the postseason.

“I think playing D-Wade on a lot of back to backs has been tough for him,” said Lue, according to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com. “Some games where he doesn’t feel great, but we don’t really have the extra ball handler to sit him. So when D-Rose gets back, he’ll definitely help with that and help with D-Wade getting his rest and being able to feel good on the floor.

“I talked to him already,” Lue continued when asked if Wade was OK with the plan to cede minutes to Rose. “[Wade is] 50 years old, so, sometimes you just don’t have it. But with all the guys being out, we just don’t have the luxury right now. So we talked about it. He understands and he’s for it.”

What’s funny is that Wade, who will turn 36 later this month, is only a few years younger than Lue, who is 40 years old himself. The 12-time All-Star isn’t even the oldest player on the Cavs roster either — that title belongs to the soon-to-be 37-year-old Kyle Korver. No word though on if Lue has a clever age-related nickname for Wade like he does for LeBron James.
