Adrien Broner pays Ashley Theophane for being overweight

Adrien Broner

For the second time in his career, Adrien Broner will be losing a championship title belt because he was overweight.

Broner is set to fight Ashley Theophane in Washington DC on Friday, but the fight will not be a title defense. Broner weighed in at 140.4 pounds on Thursday for the bout, which was supposed to be a super lightweight fight with a maximum weight of 140 pounds. As a result, Broner will lose his belt, though Theophane has a chance to win the WBA lightweight belt with a victory.

Rather than trying to sweat it out for another few hours and work off the extra 0.4 pounds, Broner reportedly agreed to pay Theophane $50,000 for being overweight.

Considering Theophane really did not have much to lose, that’s not a bad deal for him.

Broner lost a belt in 2012 for being overweight as well. He was set for a title defense at 130 pounds against Vicente Escobedo, but he weighed in at over 133 pounds. He lost the belt then because he was overweight, but he did win the fight. Broner then moved up in weight class.
