Floyd Mayweather has turned down ‘crazy’ money offers to fight again

Floyd Mayweather is so committed to retirement he says he has turned down “crazy” monetary offers to return to fighting.

Mayweather, 38, last fought in September, quietly beating Andre Berto following a heavily-hyped bout with Manny Pacquiao that turned out to be a dud. The win over Berto put Mayweather at 49-0 for his career and ended his six-fight contract with Showtime.

Since retiring, Mayweather told BBC Sport he has had “crazy numbers” thrown at him as offers to get back in the ring.

And what qualifies as “crazy numbers” when you’re Floyd Mayweather? Try nine-figure payouts.

For now Mayweather says he is not interested in a comeback, but if he were, it would have to be for a lot of money.

“As of right now, I am out completely,” Mayweather told BBC Sport.

“If I do get the itch to come back, it really won’t be for the money but I have to get paid. That’s why the nickname is Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.”

Mayweather is worth so much money — he reportedly banked well over $200 million from the Pacquiao fight alone — that he shouldn’t ever have to step back into the ring again for financial reasons. If he did return to fight, it might be to reclaim the spotlight or to go for a 50-0 record, which would be a really nice number to retire on.

But while he’s turning down nine-figure offers, he’s in the UK charging fans up to four figure sums for meet-and-greets. They don’t call him “Money” for nothing.
