Manny Pacquiao’s senate run not affected by anti-gay comments

Manny Pacquiao may have lost a sponsorship deal over his latest rant against homosexuality, but it does not appear the controversial stance has negatively affected his political campaign.

Pacquiao, who is running for one of 12 vacant seats on the Senate of the Philippines, has reportedly not lost many — if any — voters.

“Pacquiao has clearly offended the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community with his comments on same-sex marriage, but this group represents a minority and will not affect the boxer’s popularity among the voters,” political analyst Benito Lim told BoxingScene.com. “He may still win the elections.”

Pacquiao apologized for comparing those who engage in same-sex marriage to animals, but he has since maintained his stance. In an interview on Friday, he said he refuses to hide the truth and that “a lot of people are alarmed by the truth.” In addition, the 37-year-old posted this bible verse on Instagram before deleting it hours later.

While Nike has decided to terminate its relationship with Pacquiao over his latest remarks, this is hardly anything new. Pacquiao has been open about his opposition to gay marriage for years.
