Video: Kyle Busch Crashes in Final Lap, Tony Stewart Wins at Daytona

The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona didn’t end as hoped for Kyle Busch on Saturday. He was leading down the stretch and was trying to hold off Tony Stewart who was angling to make a pass to win the race. Busch held him off at first but then had a problem the second time that Stewart tried to make a pass. Check out the video:

It’s hard to say who’s really at fault but it seems to me that it was just a case of bad luck for Busch. He had to try and stay in front of Stewart to win the race and the bump to the rear sent him into the wall. Even Stewart wasn’t happy with the result despite winning the race:

“I just don’t like it to end that way,” Stewart said. “You know, you work hard to get to this level and you don’t want to see races decided by guys wrecking coming to the finish line. That’s not what it’s about. Maybe I am being hard on myself, I don’t know. But I just don’t like the way that ended up.”

People generally say that in NASCAR it comes down to who has the best car. The more I see Tony Stewart the more I’m convinced that drivers make a difference — in Stewart’s case, a big difference.

Could Danica Patrick Replace Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Hendrick Motorsports?

We’ve heard for a while about the possibility that Danica Patrick leaves Indy Car for NASCAR. Even though she signed with Andretti Green Racing, she has signed on with IMG to work her next contract. They’ve been shopping her around to all the NASCAR teams and apparently Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet are the favorites to sign her. Now if Patrick has hired IMG to work her next deal it’s pretty clear that she wants to maximize her value and the way to do that is switch to NASCAR from IRL. And if Hendrick takes her on, they’ll need to get rid of one of their drivers.

Hendrick currently has four cars in the Sprint Cup Series. Jimmie Johnson who won the last three Sprint Cups, Jeff Gordon who’s currently second in points, ageless wonder Mark Martin, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Martin’s turned things around recently by winning three races, getting into victory lane for the first time in several years. The only driver of the group who’s been struggling is Little E who even had to fire his cousin as crew chief recently. Translation: if Hendrick signs Patrick, Earnhardt could be odd man out. Could you imagine that? Little E replaced by a girl???

Video: Vitor Meira Crashes at Indy 500, Car Lights on Fire in Pits

The Indy 500 wasn’t a good race for Vitor Meira this year. The Brazilian racer finished second last year at the Brickyard but he would have been lucky to cross the finish line this time around. With 28 laps to go, Rafael Matos bumped into Meira and Meira went flying into the wall. The following crazy events transpired, and let me tell you, I’ve never seen anything like it:

Dude, did you see how long the car slid along the wall? I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for the car to come down and it never did! It was like a piece of laundry stuck to the wall of a washing machine during spin cycle. Poor Meira actually wound up breaking two vertabrae because of it. OK, now if that wasn’t gnarly enough, when his car caught on fire in the pits you knew it was going to be a long day. Speed ahead to the 1:05 mark to see his car turn into a flaming shot at a bar:

Alright, while tons of cool stuff happened at the Indy 500 (at the expense of Meira), the crap part of the whole deal was seeing Helio Castroneves win. Everyone kept talking about how this was such a “Hollywood ending” and what a great script it was. Not to me. While we’re getting slammed with paying taxes, this guy was funneling millions to offshore bank accounts to skip out on the government. And we should be celebrating him? If it weren’t for jackasses like him, maybe they’d lighten up on the rest of us a bit.

Carl Edwards Goes Airborne in Wreck on Last Lap at Talladega

How Carl Edwards walked away from this unharmed is beyond me. Let’s waste no time and go straight to the videotape:

If you told me he was at the controls of an aircraft I wouldn’t have been surprised. You see how freaking high he got? Dude had the takeoff of a jet. Edwards wasn’t even upset with Brad Keselowski after the race for the crash, saying he was more upset with NASCAR because they allow restrictor-plate racing at Talladega and because Keselowski had nowhere to go. And if you thought that wreck was bad, you haven’t even seen the half. Oh yeah, seven people were hurt by the flying debris, but nothing was serious.

They say that rubbing is racing, but I’m guessing Danica Patrick doesn’t want to hear any of it right now. Danica got bumped out of the Honda Grand Prix in St. Petersburg on Sunday by Rafael Matos. The two were coming down a tight stretch early in the race when Matos tried for a pass. He wound up bumping into Patrick and the bump caused the two of them to crash. This one seemed to be all on Matos if you ask me. Why not judge the video for yourself — skip straight to the 1:35 mark.

It’s amazing how Patrick is always the headline regardless of what she does in a race. This time she was in the right and didn’t even initiate the contact, but she’ll probably be thought of as the “bad driver” because of her reputation as a hot-head. Her quote says it all: “It’s not exactly the ideal spot to pass,” she said. “We were going into the fast chicane there and there’s no room, there’s no room for two people. … I was looking in my mirrors and I saw him. He just wasn’t all the way up next to me.” That’s exactly how it appeared to me. Their loss was Team Penske’s gain as Ryan Briscoe got the win.

Kyle Busch Serves as Best Man for Landry Wedding After Vegas Qualifying

NASCAR’s in Las Vegas this weekend, and in addition to casinos, strip clubs, and brothels, Vegas is well-known for its walk-up wedding chapels. Well, Damon and Heather Landry of Laramie, Wyoming decided the racetrack would be a cooler place to get married than some trashy chapel. One problem — Damon didn’t have a best man to help out. Good thing Kyle Busch was there for the assist.

I guess Elvis wasn’t available.

Randy Moss Is Going Japanese

With the economy going south and the big three automakers in Detroit possibly going under, it’s great to know that one of our true Patriots is doing all he can to help his country. Oops!

Randy Moss Motorsports announced Wednesday that it will partner with Toyota for the 2009 Camping World Truck Series season.

“We are extremely excited to be joining the Toyota team this season,” co-owner Randy Moss said. “Toyota has proven year in and year out that they are competitive on the track and can provide the resources to run for a championship. We are pleased to be a part of their camp.”

Moss’ team plans to compete full-time this season which is impressive in itself considering some teams had to merge or cancel cars altogether because of a lack of sponsorship. I guess that’s not the case for Moss whose checks keep rolling in from the Krafts. Would have been nice to see Moss’ team go American with their product, but then again, would have been nice to see an 11-5 team in the playoffs rather than a 9-7 in the Super Bowl.

Kevin Harvick: The All-Star Race Sucks

Kevin Harvick had a pretty good year for Richard Childress Racing, making the Chase as the 11th driver in the standings. He finished up the year as sixth in the Chase standings, 256 points behind Jimmie Johnson. Harvick ran well at the Ford 400 in Homestead, finishing second to Carl Edwards. Problem is Harvick and everyone else was already so far behind the points leader — Jimmie Johnson — that the race was practically meaningless. That’s why host Peter Brown said on Sporting News Radio that everyone loves the All-Star race, because it comes down to just one race — not an accumulation of points. Apparently everyone loves it with the exception of Kevin Harvick, who told Brown differently in an interview:

I think the All-Star race sucks. I think it has absolutely no meaning to anything that we do all year. There’s no points for it and you spend the same amount of money to go out race in a race that has absolutely no meaning. Everybody throws caution to the wind and takes a good chance of tearing everything up including themselves.

Harvick’s known for being a feisty one on the track, so to hear him make that comment really isn’t all that surprising. Thing is, how is the NASCAR All-Star race any different from an All-Star event in any other sport? They’re all spectacles purely for the fans, only this is more dangerous.

Tony Stewart Loves Him Some Women

Tony Stewart gave a pretty R-rated interview to Rolling Stone that Deadspin was kind enough to bring to my attention. I’ve already expressed my thoughts on Tony Stewart and his badass ways, so no surprise he was pretty revealing with Rolling Stone. Some of the highlights (beware, strong language):

The only thing Stewart enjoys more than a race car and a fight, it seems, is women. Over the course of a race weekend, he’s approached by dozens of them, each more long-legged, doe-eyed and blond than the last. Inside the NASCAR bubble, these gals are called “pit lizards,” and they prowl the inner sanctum at tracks throughout the year.

“My parents are afraid my dick’s gonna rot off,” Stewart says.
…
“Pussy, money and race cars. That’s pretty much all I care about.”

Alternate title for this post – Tony Stewart: American Badass. Talk about living the American Dream, I think he has just about everything wrapped up. And it’s only another year before he becomes a team owner, too. Does it get better than that?

Video: Tony Stewart Goes Nuts on USAC Racing Officials

I’ve already expressed my feelings on Tony Stewart before. It’s no surprise that I’m a fan; the guy always speaks his mind and doesn’t back down to anyone or anything. What’s there not to like about him? Well, maybe incidents like the one that took place last week at a USAC race in Indiana. Jay Busbee provided the details via WTHR. Check out the video of the incident and keep in mind this is Tony wearing his owner’s hat after hearing his driver wouldn’t be let back onto the track following a wreck:

Busbee said that this incident didn’t receive any coverage over the weekend and wonders why. I’m not sure why it would be buried to tell you the truth, but now that the cat’s out of the bag, I expect Stewart to face the music at some point this week. And hello, Mark Cuban of racing!
