Report: FBI corruption case will wreak havoc on college basketball

basketball

The multiple arrests made by the FBI in the fall related to a college basketball scandal may only be the tip of the iceberg in what is expected to become a bombshell case.

Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel published an article on the corruption case Thursday, and he says that during the discovery process, the FBI has uncovered many more examples of corruption in college hoops. He says there could be evidence against potentially as many as 50 college basketball programs violating NCAA rules.

Information the feds have come across during the discovery portion of their case comes from wiretaps, computer records and bank documents that show the contacts made between coaches, shoe companies, players, handlers, agents and financial advisers. Several prominent programs, athletes and coaches are reportedly included in the discovery.

One issue is that the information uncovered during the discovery from the FBI is under protection. However, it’s possible some or all of the dirt could be leaked, which would put teams in danger of NCAA sanctions.

The initial September arrests included four college basketball assistant coaches. Some coaches were accused of being bribed to steer players to financial advisers. Others were accused of being bribed to steer players to certain colleges.

There are three separate criminal complaints in the matter.
