John Calipari hits out at Buffalo coach for ‘whining’ comment

John Calipari

The coaches in Saturday’s Buffalo-Kentucky second round game have sparked a bit of a miniature rivalry.

Kentucky coach John Calipari did not take kindly to Buffalo coach Nate Oats’s accusation that he was “whining” about his team’s relative lack of experience, saying he was just being honest about his freshman-heavy team.

“I don’t know if it’s whining or I’m telling the truth,” Calipari said when told of the quote, via Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio. “I’m not whining about it. I got a pretty good team, but I am telling the truth. ‘He shouldn’t tell the truth. He should not even say it. Introduce them and don’t give their year.’ That’s fine. At the end of the day we gotta play a basketball game. Everybody’s gotta get in the ring and play.”

Oats has been talking up his team’s advantage in upperclassmen, while Calipari hasn’t been shy about pointing out that his team is pretty much all freshmen. This should be an interesting matchup.
