Youngest Gasol brother walking on at UCLA

The youngest Gasol brother reportedly has enrolled at UCLA and is planning to walk-on to the school’s basketball team.

Multiple reports say 18-year-old Adria Gasol has enrolled at UCLA to be an engineering student. A UCLA spokesperson told The Dagger that Gasol will not join the team for its exhibition tour in China, but that he will begin practicing with the squad in the fall.

Adria Gasol is 6’10” but does not appear to be as talented as older brothers Pau and Marc, who have combined to make five NBA All-Star teams. The youngest Gasol played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Lausanne Collegiate School in Memphis, Tenn., before returning to Spain the last two years. He worked out with the 18-U Spanish national team but failed to make the roster, according to The Dagger.

“He picked up basketball a little late,” Marc Gasol said of his brother to NBA.com in 2010. “It all depends on how much he loves the game and wants to play.”

As long as Adria is paying tuition, it won’t cost the Bruins to let him train with the team, so they have very little to lose. At the least, he may be a late developer like his brother Marc, who was hardly considered a prospect before blooming with the Grizzlies.

Adria Gasol will join the son of Jack Haley, Detlef Schrempf, and Larry Drew as the latest player with basketball pedigree to join the Bruins. UCLA is also rapidly becoming the home for many athletes with famous relatives.
