Big 12 sent ESPN cease and desist letter over Star Wars commercial

Star Wars

The Big 12 sent ESPN a cease and desist letter to have them stop using a commercial involving TCU and Baylor players as part of a “Star Wars” promotion.

Prior to last weekend’s big game between TCU and Baylor, ESPN ran an intro featuring clips from the upcoming Star Wars movie mixed with clips of Horned Frogs and Bears highlights, CBS Sports reports. Upon learning of the video, the Big 12 sent a letter to ESPN asking them to discontinue using the video as college players are not allowed to have their image or likeness used for commercial purposes.

ESPN has complied and removed the video from their website. They also issued a statement saying, “after the Big 12 brought this to our attention, we worked closely with them to resolve the situation.”

The conference was concerned with the players not having their eligibility compromised due to their appearance in a commercial for a movie. With ESPN complying, the NCAA says they consider the matter resolved.
