Boone Pickens now thinks Mike Gundy can beat Oklahoma

Mike Gundy

One of Oklahoma State’s biggest boosters has had a change of heart on Mike Gundy.

Gundy took over for Les Miles prior to the 2005 season. Since then, the Cowboys have gone 2-11 versus instate rival Oklahoma, including last season’s 62-52 loss. At many schools, how you fare against your biggest rivals is important. Oklahoma State is no different.

T. Boone Pickens, a huge Oklahoma State booster, has been critical of Gundy over the years for his lack of success against the Sooners. However, he now appears to have more confidence in Gundy’s ability to beat Oklahoma.

“I know I ruffled a few feathers when I said Mike couldn’t beat OU,” Pickens told The Oklahoman. “I’ve shifted my focus. I think Mike can beat Lincoln Riley, and I want to be there when it happens.”

After last season’s defeat to Oklahoma, Pickens sent a supportive message to Gundy. That seemed to be a step in the right direction and a change for a relationship that wasn’t on strong footing.

Oklahoma State will be looking to beat Oklahoma for the first time since 2014 and third time since 2003 later this year.
